EARED 6117 - Ideas Into Action
"In this course, we will examine the historical and contemporary theoretical frameworks that have shaped how community arts in a wide span of artistic disciplines. Why has the community arts movement taken hold in the United States of America and across the international spectrum? Research proves that the arts bolster economic development, serve as connectors between neighborhoods and cultural/ethnic groups, and revitalize (physically and emotionally) urban and rural places. To achieve these dynamic possibilities, we must know how to turn ideas into action by gaining crucial skills in arts administration, audience development, and project development."
EARED 6003 - Arts Approach to Multicultural Education
"This course will explore the arts as a tool to raise awareness about cultural difference in the context of pedagogical practice. Following a carefully designed developmental process, students will first focus on their own cultural identity, perspectives, ideas, and practices. The students’ understanding of their own social location will be the basis for the study of multicultural education in its historical and political context. Finally, students will be able to apply their knowledge in the creation of educational environments that promote multicultural understanding and collaboration."

EARED 6002 - Arts & Children with Special Needs
"This course explores how the arts enhance learning for children who have special needs in both substantially separate and inclusive settings as well as critically examining the political, social and cultural implications of what it means to be “a person with a disability.” The course gives attention to addressing the theory of multiple intelligences as a venue for teaching students of all abilities. Specific strategies for using the arts to directly enhance cooperative learning, self-expression, self esteem, problem solving skills and basic literacy, language and communication skills will be presented."
EARED 7106 - Multiple Literacies
"Participants will: broaden the definition of literacy to include the arts as languages and incorporate Freire¹s notion of reading and writing the world; consider how 21st Century Skills influence the kinds of literacies citizens need to have successful lives and articulate the arts’ role in allowing students to access information and express understanding in multiple ways. They will define their approach as artist educators in addressing multiple literacies in and out-of-school contexts, identify the literacies embedded in their work and in the community contexts they work in, develop skills to identify objectives for their work, documenting learning, outcomes of their, work, and increase the potency of marketing and descriptive material. Finaly they will identify a variety of potential places where their work might unfold, and develop ideas for partnership models, consider the context of the communities within which they are working and articulate how different types of literacies including visual literacy,technological literacy, cultural literacy, and environmental literacy can shape their work."
EARTS 5351 - Storytelling
"This course is designed to introduce participants to the practical use of storytelling as a tool of empowerment and inspiration for educational purposes within their classrooms and communities. Participants will learn and tell a variety of stories in their classrooms and/or communities. They will explore ways storytelling can be used to celebrate diverse cultures, increase literacy and competency in their classroom and build community through hybrid models and online technologies. Emphasis will be on application of what is learned throughout the course to meet curriculum goals and the goals of the state and/or national standards. Participants will identify ways to help their students develop better oral communication skills, enhance self-esteem, spark their imaginations, and create closer classroom communities while deepening students’ appreciation for story, language, diverse cultures, and themselves."

EARTS 6001 - Colaborative Symposium
"Series of workshops led by artists and leaders in multicultural education, offering a variety of arts modalities and avenues to understanding cultural differences. Participants will explore the integration of drama, dance, music, visual arts, storytelling, and poetry into multicultural approaches to teaching and learning. This symposium will emphasize collaborative work in the arts as a path toward democratic schooling and social justice."
EARED 6091 - Transformational Leadership Through Drama
"This course is designed to explore the theory and practice of drama as a catalyst for education and transformation in schools and communities. The process will focus on the use of drama for education, issue resolution, empowerment, and transformational leadership in a variety of educational settings. The course will emphasize the use of participatory drama structures and techniques that foster democratic education, diversity, collaborative solutions, and social justice in the classroom and beyond. We will also examine how the process supports the curricular standards of the state."

EARED 5009 - Drama and Critical Literacy
"Drama and Critical Literacy uses theatre-based learning to bridge literacy skills with meaningful community interactions within the school and in the larger community. The course will explore diverse cultural perspectives and multiple paths to learning. It will also enable teachers to engage in critical questioning, explore language as social practice; create and employ spoken, written, visual, and spatial texts across the curriculum. This process supports integration of drama into subject areas such as language arts and social studies. The course also investigates issues of diversity and differences in schooling, applying dramatic learning strategies to the social dimensions of classroom, family and community dynamics."
EARED 7102 - Arts-Based Research
"This course focuses on arts-based research as practiced in the arts, education and other social sciences. We will examine using the creative process and various arts modalities to research human experience. We will explore various models of arts-based research, and students will develop research projects grounded in an arts-based method."
EARTS 6203 - The Language of Poetry
"By writing, sharing and reading contemporary and traditional poetry, course participants gain skills in using poetry to augment language, writing and literacy skills in their own students. Students develop ways to combine poetry with other art forms, and to integrate poetry into elementary and secondary curriculum.

EARED 7100 - Educator Inquiry: Seminar and Thesis
"This course is a seminar delivered in a hybrid model. Students participate in on-line discussions and attend a bi-weekly faculty sponsored seminar. Students will complete a 150 hour field based experience, conduct arts based research, and examine issues in the field of community arts pertaining to their area of specialization. Students will also create a reflective portfolio documenting and assessing their learning in community arts."
